Going Natural – Starting your journey the right way

Making the decision to nix the bad hair habits of your past is not an easy one for most women on the verge of taking the plunge into the natural hair life. Despite a continued growth of support and community (not to mention great products!) in the natural hair industry, letting go of those old standards of beauty can create some anxiety in even the most confident diva. Will you have to cut all your hair off? Is it really going to take you hours to get ready every day? With questions swirling in your head it is easy to get overwhelmed with taking on essentially a new lifestyle outside of Saturdays at the salon. Here at Bella Curls, our goal is to support your curl journey every step of the way. Not just with products made for naturals, but with love, community, support and education. If you are ready to start your healthy hair journey, we’ve got some quick tips on getting those nerves out of the way!

To Chop or Not to Chop

One of the scariest aspects of going natural for many women used to the perm and relaxer life is whether or not they will have to cut off all of their hard-earned length. The answer is a mixed bag anywhere you ask. Here at Bella Curls, we have a solid mix of Big Choppers and Transitioners. The benefit to starting your journey in the Spring and Summer months is having a great reason to cut it all off and start a new! There are so many gorgeous short and tapered styles out there for every face shape.
If you want to keep it longer and transition for a while, no sweat. But remember, healthy hair starts with nourishing your hair daily! Even if you aren’t big chopping, your ends are likely toast and a good trim at a salon equipped to deal with natural and transitioning hair is in order. Long transitions do take a little more work, but you can look at perm rod sets and curl formers to help give shape to all of your hair in the process. Avoid the desire to heat straighten every day and look into the tension method if you must straighten in this time frame.

Chemicals say what?

There are some absolute do and do not evers when it comes to what you put in your hair. Sulfates, Parabens, and Phthalates are all the way out! Harsh chemicals in your products will undo all the good work you are doing to stay away from perms and relaxers. Take this moment to go spring clean your hair care area. There are lots of natural products that you should look for in your haircare that your tresses are craving right now. Coconut oil, Shea Butter, healthy proteins and lots of extra slip for detangling. Avoid heat as much as you can for a while do and work up your no-heat styling chops by styling your hair at night and letting it dry overnight. A little blow drying with a diffuser on low heat can help train your curls back to life, just make sure you aren’t blasting them to frizz with high heat or high winds!

Come through curl sisters

The advent of social media has made the natural hair movement a true phenomenon and an easy educational source for women looking to undo their years of straight haired programming. Whether you choose to big chop or take the long route, if you need helping styling or ideas for your next do, there’s a beauty maven for that. Follow our Instagram @bella_curls_hair for style inspirations and product go-tos for every step of your curl journey. We often share other naturalistas and curly girls going through the same process you are! There are many benefits to starting your healthy hair journey and a community that loves and supports you is the icing on the curly cake.   And remember – post pics and tag us in your journey, we love seeing our curl sisters at work!
